Fontechiari

Located in the Comino Valley, the town of Fontechiari is perfectly situated for those wishing to explore the majestic Meta, Pizzo Deta and Mainarde mountains or trek through the surrounding forests and Sora basin. It is an old town whose ancient center was once encircled by huge walls dating back to the time of the Boncompagni in the 14th century. Portions of these medieval walls still exist, as does a tall square tower which dominates the center of the town.

The original name of the town was Schiavi, meaning �slaves�, derived from local history. For it was here that the Roman general Gaius Marius of Arpinum (Arpino) housed his slaves. In 1862, Fontechiari acquired its current name from the many fresh water springs found in the region.

In addition to the natural beauty and serenity of the town, Fontechiari is also the site of several important works of art. The Church of St. Giovanni Evangelista e Battista holds several 14th century frescoes, the silver Processional Cross of the 14th century Sulmonese School, as well as valuable paintings attributed to Giuseppe Cesari. Featured in these artworks are St. Biagio, St. Filomena, St. Rocco and others. Giuseppe Cesari�s painting, La Madonna del Rosaria, as well as a 13th century wooden carving of Christ are in the possession of the Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Fratelli.
