Casalvieri

East of the Comino Valley, where the Melfa River plunges into wild gorges, is the tranquil town of Casalvieri. The name derives from an ancient name, Domus Olivieri. The old town is made up of colorful buildings decorated with stone windows and doors. Among these is the 18th century Cellitto palace. Each year, on the last Sunday in May, the few remaining townspeople open their workshops for the exhibition of local products and period agricultural equipment, including an 1860-vintage tractor. People from all over the region are invited to participate in honor of the celebration of Casalvieri’s patron saint. This town fair is repeated during the second week of August.

Anyone going to Casalvieri must pay a visit to the Church of St. Giovanni Battista e Evangelista. Contained in two niches of the Baroque façade of this church are several pieces of statuary and artwork. Among these is “The Assunta”, painted by the Cavalier d’Arpino. The Sacristy of St. Giovanni Battista e Evangelista is also of interest for its fine wooden sculptures.

Nearby, in the small hamlet of Roselli, visitors will find the Church of St. Maria Delle Rose, dating back to the 17th century.

For those with a passion for archaeology, Casalvieri is nearby to several extremely important excavations – the 4th century votive warehouse of Pescarola, as well as ruins of a thermal spa and connected canal system.
